How this EUR to USD converter works
This tool converts between EUR and USD using the official reference rate published by the European Central Bank. Each business day, the ECB runs a concertation procedure with national central banks at around 14:10 CET, then publishes the resulting reference rates at around 16:00 CET. Enter any amount above and use the swap button to convert in either direction.
The rate shown is a reference midpoint rate, published for information purposes rather than for transactions. It does not include the markup that banks, card networks, or money transfer services typically add. The amount you actually receive will usually be slightly different. This tool is provided for general reference only and is not financial or investment advice.
Bank markup, and when to convert
Banks, card networks, and money transfer providers rarely give you the reference rate directly. Most add a markup on top of it, and US regulators have flagged that this markup is not always clearly disclosed, especially when a transfer is advertised as "free." The size of the markup varies by provider. Compare the rate you are actually offered against the reference rate on this page to see your real cost.
Because the ECB only updates this rate once per business day, checking it several times in one day will not show a different number. What matters for timing is which business day you check, not the hour.
How a EUR to USD rate is set each day
- 1. Central banks concertation (~14:10 CET): National central banks across the EU and the ECB agree on the day's reference rates in a daily teleconference.
- 2. ECB publication (~16:00 CET): The European Central Bank publishes the official euro foreign exchange reference rates for the day.
- 3. This page updates (within the hour): This site fetches the published rate and displays it for EUR to USD, cached for up to an hour.
Exchange rate terms explained
- Mid-market rate
- The midpoint between the buy and sell price of a currency on the global market, with no markup added. This is what the reference rate on this page shows.
- Reference rate
- An official rate published once a day by a central bank (here, the European Central Bank) for information purposes. It is a snapshot, not a live trading price.
- Spot rate
- The rate for exchanging currency immediately, as quoted by a bank, broker, or trading platform in real time. It moves continuously during market hours and includes that provider's own margin.
- Exchange rate markup
- The margin a bank, card network, or transfer provider adds on top of the mid-market rate. It is often not shown as a separate fee, which is why two providers advertising "no fees" can still give very different amounts.
Getting a better EUR to USD rate
Compare the total amount received, not just the fee
A "no fee" transfer can still cost more than one with a small fee, because the markup is hidden in the exchange rate itself. Compare the final USD amount you would receive, not the advertised fee.
Watch for dynamic currency conversion at checkout
When paying by card abroad, you are often asked to pay in your home currency instead of the local one. This is dynamic currency conversion, and it typically uses a worse rate than your card network's own conversion. Choosing the local currency is usually cheaper.
Airport and hotel currency counters are rarely competitive
Convenience locations charge some of the largest markups on the mid-market rate. A bank, a dedicated transfer service, or a card that does not add a foreign transaction fee is almost always cheaper.
Large or recurring transfers benefit most from shopping around
A 1-2% difference in markup is a rounding error on a small purchase but a meaningful amount on a large transfer or a recurring payment like rent or payroll. Compare providers directly for anything sizeable.
